Memorial Field
Memorial Park is the main location for the majority of Closter’s sports fields. It features a Little League field, named in honor of Closter Recreation’s patriarch and founder - George Potterton. There is a girl’s softball field, which is dedicated to long-time Closter resident and coach, Leo Liddy, in 2008. The large grassy playing area, used for Closter Cobras Football and Recreation Soccer, is dedicated to one of our nation’s sports heroes, Pat Tillman, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country while serving our country in Afghanistan following September 11, 2001.
Memorial Park also features a multi-use playground for children 3-14 years of age. The Closter Lions Bandshell hosts concerts periodically throughout the summer and during the town’s Labor Day Celebration, held usually on the Monday of Labor Day weekend. Opening day of the spring baseball/softball season, the Little League marches in their annual parade from Borough Hall to Memorial Field. The opening day ceremony is held at the George Potterton Little League Field. Additionally, there are also two basketball courts whose lights are on daily until approximately 10:30pm (weather permitting). The snack stand is open when sporting events are held at the various fields of the park. There are two bathrooms located in the field house. The bathrooms are closed from November-April, as the water in the parks is turned off until the spring thaw. The Recreation sponsored Summer Camp takes place at Memorial Park and runs from late June through the month of July and features arts and crafts, games, and special events. The free program is run Monday through Friday, from 9:30-12 noon, weather permitting. Most importantly on Memorial Day, Closter hosts a Memorial Day parade. This solemn event proceeds through town and ends at the Memorial in the park. This annual event commemorates those Closter residents who died in servitude to our great country and culminates in the “laying of the wreaths” by the various civic organizations in the community and the “roll call” of our fallen soldiers The address for Memorial Park is 150 Harrington Ave, Closter NJ, 07624. |
