Wrestling
Boys & Girls (Grades K~8)
Closter - Demarest - Haworth

One of the world's oldest sports, wrestling provides an excellent way to build balance, strength and endurance.  It is a tremendous compliment to other sports and martial arts, and it is a great way to stay in shape when it is too cold to be outside.

BENEFITS
Wrestlers will learn the rules of competition, offensive and defensive techniques, as well as match strategy.  Practice is structured to develop confidence, self-discipline and leadership skills, while boosting strength, speed and agility.

REQUIREMENTS
There are no tryouts, weight restrictions, or skill requirements.  Wrestlers can start at any age (K-8, boys and girls).  Wrestlers are paired up with opponents of the same age, weight and experience level.  And while wrestlers may lose weight and/or gain muscle mass during the season, we do not encourage excessive weight loss.

NEWS
This year NJSIAA added a girls division for the high school state tournament. Our league (tcjwl) is considering doing the same for our league tournaments.

SCHEDULE
We have practices two or three nights a week starting the week after Thanksgiving and going through mid-February.  Practices are at NVD High School.  In January and February, we compete in six Saturday scrimmages and a few Sunday tournaments.  Competition is encouraged (we think it’s the fun part), but not required.

UNIFORMS
  • Traditional one-piece singlet OR Shorts and Compression Tee-Shirt
  • Wrestling Specific Headgear
  • Wrestling Specific Shoes
  • Wrestling Specific Hair Cover (for long hair)
  • Mouthguard (for braces)

Ski Club (Grades 6 ~ 8)
see separate Ski Club tab under Programs

Closter Recreation sponsored ski club includes 4 trips to Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ.  Trips are on Friday evenings and leave directly from Tenakill Middle School.  The ski club is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders only.  The fee covers membership, bus fare to Mountain Creek, 4 lift tickets and 4 lessons (the day of the trip).  It does not include rentals but we do provide a 10% discount for Mount Everest in Westwood.  This is a great opportunity for children to learn to ski for the first time or to just get some skiing in with their friends.
