Parents - We hope this message finds everyone well and staying safe and sound.

Below you will find comprehensive details on spring sports, summer recreation and any information that we have at this time.

We would like to emphasize that Closter Recreation, Haworth Recreation and Demarest Recreation's (DAA)  number one priority is keeping the children and families safe during these unprecedented times. Any programs that are run will be conducted following all recommended protocols set forth by the governor’s office, local health and OEM offices, and local town officials. We must PLAN for rec programs accordingly, and we will be moving forward on the basis of these agencies and officials, allowing programs to take place as the spring/summer approaches.
T-BALL/BASEBALL/SOFTBALL 2021
Spring Baseball/Girls Softball
We are planning on running the following programs for K-8 boy and girls:
·       K Tee ball (depending upon the number of boys and girls that register will determine if this is going to be a Coed program or boys separate from girls)
·       1/2 girls Softball
·       1 boys Baseball
·       2 boys Baseball
·       3/4 Girls Softball
·       3/4 Boys Baseball
·       5/6 Girls Softball
·       5/6 Boys Baseball
·       7/8 Girls Softball
·       7/8 Boys Baseball

Dates:
K-2 will not start until late April (tentatively Sunday April 25th following opening day ceremonies in Closter)
Evaluations for boys and girls REC- grades 3-8 will take place in mid-March, tentatively the weekend of 3/20.
Rec Baseball Softball games for boys and girls will start tentatively the week of April 19th.

Coaches: Coaches are needed for all levels of baseball and softball. More so especially during these unprecedented times. In order to coach or assist, parents must take a one time (ONLINE) Rutgers Safety Class. PLEASE considering volunteering to help coach your child's team(s). Parents who take the Online class will be reimbursed once they submit their Rutgers safety card. (This is one of the only good things to come from the pandemic- that this course can now be taken ONLINE!!!). Information and the link to upcoming Rutgers safety classes can be found below within the Lacrosse info.

Travel Baseball Grades 1st-8th grade
Travel baseball for the more serious baseball player in a competitive baseball league will be offered for children in grades 1 through 8. In order to play TRAVEL baseball, the children must be registered for REC baseball. Only the children that are registered for REC Baseball will receive information on travel evaluations/tryouts. Dates for these tryouts are tentatively scheduled for mid-March.

REGISTRATION for Baseball/Softball
Registration will be open in Closter CommunityPass for Closter and Haworth residents on 2/1-3/12 and in Demarest CommunityPass for Demarest residents on the same dates 2/1-3/12. Take advantage of the early bird!!!

SUMMER RECREATION (for closter children only)
FULL DAY SUMMER RECREATION (for Closter children only)
We are completely at the mercy of the governor’s office, local Board of Health and OEM offices and the schools allowing us to use the facilities for our summer rec program to take place.  We are planning to send out a SURVEY the first week of February.  We ask that all parents interested in sending their children to the full day summer rec program to fill out the survey.  This will allow us to plan properly and see what our needs are for space and counselors.  We will NOT be collecting fees until we are 100% certain that we will be able to offer a camp this year.

HALF DAY FREE SUMMER RECREATION (for Closter children only)
If we are able to run the Full Day Summer Rec program, our half day - free summer rec program will also run.
BOYS’ NV Junior Lacrosse (Closter, Demarest, Haworth)
Boys’ NV Junior Lacrosse is available for youth players in grades 3-8th, who feed into the Northern Valley Regional HS Demarest.
The season runs from early March through the beginning of June. Practices are held Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays between 7-9pm at NVD High School. Tournament fees are included in the price.
Fully officiated games begin at the end of March and are a mix of Home and Away venues.
NV Junior Norsemen is part of the NJJLL and governed by its rules for lacrosse.
Teams are combinations of 3/4th, 5/6th and 7/8th grade players. NV Junior Norsemen reserves the right to limit registration and/or have tryouts if the maximum number of registrants is reached at the older grade levels. If numbers are low, we may conduct intra-squad scrimmages instead of league games in order to give new players more hands-on experience.
US Lacrosse Membership: Players must have a valid US Lacrosse number, through the end of June, in order to participate. This number can be obtained by visiting www.uslacrosse.org.
UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT: Uniform and protective equipment is not included in the total fee*. Players must have their own helmet, padding, mouth guard and stick. Cleats are recommended. Information on proper equipment can be found here: https://www.uslacrosse.org/safety/equipment. If you are buying new chest protectors, it is important to keep in mind that as of 2022, all field players will be required to wear the new ND-200 chest protector, which helps reduce risk of commotio cordis.
GOALIES: As of January 1, 2021, goalies must wear the new NOCSAE ND-200 performance standard chest protector, which reduces the risk of commotio cordis (cardiac arrest due to a blow to the heart area.)
Registration Fee:
Boys Spring 2021 season: $300 (does not include uniform*)
Uniform Set (jersey, shorts and shooter shirt): $80
Uniform - Jersey Only: $50
COACHES: Teams are coached by paid professional club coaches and assisted by parent volunteers. Our coaches are all US Lacrosse certified. The program is overseen by the NV Demarest HS lacrosse coaches, who provide drills and strategy appropriate for youth players. Many high school players who have gone through the NV Junior Norsemen program will assist our head coaches as well.
We are always looking for more volunteer parents to help us coach.
In order to help or assist, parents/coaches need to be US Lacrosse Level 1 certified, Rutgers SAFETY class certified, and have completed the Concussion training. Here are the online course links:

It is with much sadness that I let you all know that Steven Potterton passed away on January 29th, after fighting a brave fight against Cancer.   Steven was one of a kind and he will be greatly missed by all that loved him.  He meant so much to so many and his dedication to the youth of Closter and his love for the town was unmatched.  We must strive to remember him and his great work forever and use his life as example of a truly great friend and a person who gave his all to the town and people he cared so much about.   Please say a prayer for his family...  JimO

Folks, please take the few minutes it will take to watch this amazing uplifting video.  :)

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at the annual YMCA Awards dinner at the Venetian in Garfield- Closter’s own Wayne Sabo was recognized for his years of volunteerism with various organizations in Closter.

Wayne has been a long time member of the Closter Recreation Commission and it is an honor to call him a friend. :)

Being there and witnessing his speech sent chills down people’s spines.  The night was filled with countless speeches by very deserving individuals, with many of the people in attendance talking through and over the speakers.  Wayne quieted the room with his speech that resonated with everyone and for all of the volunteers out there.  I am sure you will agree with his sentiments!!

At this special time of year it was a heartwarming, and heartfelt speech that drew a standing ovation from the hundreds of people in attendance when he was finished.

I hope you enjoy the video, wishing everyone Happy Holidays and I thank everyone for their giving to the community and a special THANK YOU to Wayne for his years of service.
