Attention Parents! All of the parks in Closter (Memorial, Ruckman, Mollicone, and Schauble) now have lightning detectors. When a lightning strike is detected in the vicinity (5 mile radius), the siren will sound (30 seconds) and the strobe light will flash. The strobe light will be on for 30 minutes, or longer, if another lightning strike is detected during the 30 minute wait period. Coaches and players MUST clear the field when the system is triggered. Everyone on the field needs to seek shelter in a car or in a building. Please stay local if there is inclement weather the day of a game, to be able to have your child wait out the storm in your car. It is only safe to return to the field, when the strobe light ceases to flash.
Thank you for your cooperation. |
A Word from the Director, Jim Oettinger
Our goal as the Recreation Commission and Closter Coaches Association is to provide an outlet for our children to participate in and enjoy a well rounded sports program. No matter the skill level, we feel that athletic activities should be a vital part of young people's lives. Whether your child has never played a sport or is a travel level player for a given sport, we want to make their experience with youth sports a good one.
Youth sports teach children great lessons, how to win with grace, lose with dignity and persevere during tough times. Embrace winning, battle back from defeat and never give up to strive to be a better athlete and a better person are lessons that we hope all children will learn from participating in Closter's Recreation Programs.
The Recreation Commission is open to new ideas with the caveat of get involved and help us, help your children with current sports programs and new ones that you might be interested in having in Closter. Working together, we can make all of the children's sports memories good ones, ones that they will look back on with fond memories when they become young adults, adults, and parents of their own children.
Enjoy these days of your children's youth, and remember it is just a game, let them enjoy the games and make sure that they all have fun!!!

Our History
The Recreation Commission came to being shortly after World War II and sponsors a major portion of Closter's recreational activities. The Commission consists of 20 members, seven members appointed by the Closter Council for five-year staggered terms.
The Recreation Commission creates and maintains the policies for the Recreation programs in the community. The Director of the program is responsible to the Mayor and the Council appointed Commission. Funds for operation are provided by the Municipal budget and registration fees that are collected for each activity. The Director, his assistants and summer staff are part time salaried employees of the Borough. All other Commission members and coaches are volunteers.
