COACHES - thank you for volunteering!
You MUST complete the Rutgers SAFETY clinic AND the Concussion Training prior to coaching all sports.

Concussion Training

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention have put together an online training course and information fact sheet for concussions. This course will help coaches and parents to:
  • Understand a concussion and the potential consequences of this injury
  • Recognize concussion signs and symptoms and how to respond
  • Learn about steps for returning to activity (play and school) after a concussion, and
  • Focus on prevention and preparedness to help keep athletes safe season-to-season

COACHES: You will be able to print one or more copies and/or save an electronic version of your certificate of completion to your desktop after you complete the training course.  Please email [email protected] with the electronic version of your certificate for records.

Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y Clinic "Developing the Child Inside the Athlete"

The state of New Jersey requires volunteer coaches to attend a "safety orientation and training skills program" in order to be eligible for civil immunity protection provided by the Little League Law (2A:62A-6 et. seq.) The curriculum for the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic is based upon the Minimum Standards for Volunteer Coaches Safety Orientation and Training Skills Programs (N.J.A.C. 5:52) and has been tested in court as having met the standards.

COACHES:  You will be reimbursed for the course.  Please provide a copy of the Coaches Card that you will be issued when you complete the class to Jim Oettinger at [email protected] after completion of the course.

Volunteer to be a Coach!

Experience is NOT needed to coach or assist in coaching. The Recreation Commission and the CCA will help train parents on coaching and training the children for the various sports.  We urge all parents of children who are participating in the Recreation sports programs to get more involved in their children's sports programs and volunteer in some manner.

Before coaching any Recreation sports team, you must take a one-time        Rutgers Youth Sports Safety Course.  Please contact Jim Oettinger at [email protected] if you are interested in signing up for the course.

Anyone wishing to coach a travel team will need to fill in an application, meet with the Recreation Commission’s Coaches Selection Committee, and meet criteria set forth by the Recreation Commission prior to be being selected as the travel team coach.
To volunteer to be a coach, please follow the instructions below:
1) Log in to the Community Pass system,
2) Select the "Coach Volunteer" program,
3) Verify Account Information,
4) Continue to select the adult to be the participant,
5) Choose Coach and fill in the questionnaire form.
Should you  have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Coaches' Code of Ethics

I hereby pledge to live up to my certification as a NYSCA Coach by following the NYSCA Coaches’ Code of Ethics:
  • I will place the emotional and physical well being of my players ahead of a personal desire to win.
  • I will treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of emotional and physical development for the same age group.
  • I will do my best to provide a safe playing situation for my players.
  • I promise to review and practice basic first aid principles needed totreat injuries of my players.
  • I will do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for all my players.
  • I will lead by example in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship to all my players.
  • I will provide a sports environment for my team that is free of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, and I will refrain from their use at all youth sports events.
  • I will be knowledgeable in the rules of each sport that I coach, and I will teach these rules to my players.
  • I will use those coaching techniques appropriate for all of the skills that I teach.
